Disability Football has been running now for five months and young people from Ballyfermot, Tallaght, Clondalkin and Crumlin have been invited along to give a try. The sessions are organized by Michael Moore from the FAI, Catherine Flood from Dublin City Council and a number of parents who volunteer their time. Michael said “We want to get people of all abilities playing football”. This is a chance for young people and children with disabilities to try out sports in their local area. “There are children coming here from all over the area at the moment, wearing Manchester Utd., Liverpool and Shamrock Rovers Jerseys.”
Shirley Dunne, the secretary of the local group, was surprised how much her granddaughter, who is a wheelchair user, adores the weekly games and fun. Michael said, “We are looking for more young people to get involved and for volunteers to keep the clubs up and running”. The club runs from 5.30pm every Thursday at a cost of two euro.
Shirley is also working with Catholic Youth Care, RAPID and other parents to set up a weekly club in the Ballyfermot Civic Centre for children with disabilities with a focus on drama, music and boica. This will be starting in the next few weeks. Shirley is keen that other parents get involved.
