The fifth anniversary of the smoking ban in pubs in Ireland has just gone by but factions are still divided about the success of this legislation. Those in favour of the ban view it as a resounding success while its detractors point out that smoking in Ireland has increased since the ban....
Howya will be staged at the brand new Black Box Theatre, at The Base, Blackditch Road, Ballyfermot at 8pm on Fridays 24 April and 8 May 2009
This view is backed up by government statistics and also by the news that smuggled cigarettes account for up to a quarter of all cigarettes smoked in Ireland. The loss to the Irish exchequer from illegal cigarettes is expected to be in excess of 500 million Euros next year.
When Micheal Martin Irelands Minister for Health introduced the "Politically Correct" ban on smoking in public places in March 2004 he started a debate that turned father against son and brother against brother. In pubs all over the country non smokers cheered in the new clean air legislation and shouted their approval as marginalized smokers were forced onto the street or into hastily built lean-tos. Smokers in turn rounded on non smokers and legislators, predicting an end to the pub culture of the country and vilifying "Nanny State"
politics.
"It's gone a ridiculous country isn't it! If it keeps going the way it's going you wont be able to fart for fear the Guards'll lock ya up for making noise" says Mrs. Gibney, one of the seven characters portrayed by actress Mary Murray in the new one woman comedy Howya - set in the smoking room of a Dublin pub in 2004. The play specially commissioned by Visions Productions for Mary Murray was written by Robbie Woodman and directed by Frank Allen.
Scandal knows no bounds as seven women gossip intermittently in the smoking room of a Dublin pub, leaking information as they go. As the innocent along with the guilty suffer the stings of innuendo and the lashes of sharp tongues a hilarious tale of crime and its consequences unfolds.
