Habitat For Humanity Biggest Irish Build To Date PDF Print E-mail

Habitat for Humanity Ireland will commence its largest build to date in Ireland in spring of 2009 when it breaks ground on a site for 16 houses in Ballyfermot. Click Here to read pdf biggest_build full press release 102.19 Kb

The units based in the Elmdale Estate will be three-bedroom houses, each with front and back gardens, and a car parking space. These houses will be built in partnership with Dublin City Council, Sisk and with selected families, volunteers and the local community.  Priority for homeownership will be given to local people who are seeking an affordable home-ownership opportunity in the area.

Since its establishment in Dublin in 2002, Habitat for Humanity Ireland has been involved in building and refurbishment projects in Ballymun and Ballyfermot as well as running a programme which enables Irish volunteers to work on projects abroad.  In 2005, RTE's About the House had a special feature on HFHI's Ballymun regeneration project.

Homeowners are selected to partner with Habitat for Humanity Ireland based on the following criteria: need for decent accommodation, ability to make mortgage repayments [income level], and a willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity Ireland. Partner families contribute 500 hours ‘Sweat Equity', putting their time into the building of their home. All applicants must be on the DCC housing waiting list, and if possible be associated with the local area. Habitat for Humanity Ireland works in partnership with EBS Building Society to provide affordable mortgages for partner families.

According to spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity Ireland, Kevin McGarry, "Habitat for Humanity believes in a person's right to have a 'simple, decent place to live'; the tragedy is that numbers on the social housing waiting list actually increased during the economic boom and now stand 59,000 - something has to be done".

All interested families must fill in an application form available from our office at Quadrant House, Chapelizod or http://www.habitatireland.ie/   Habitat for Humanity will answer any further questions at 01-6299611 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
