After almost 50 years since he first tread the boards with the Johnny Butler Dance band, veteran singer and musician Sonny Knowles can still pull a crowd. Sonny began his career in the mid 1950's when he learned clarinet and sax in the Dublin School of music. He first came to public attention in the Earl Gill Showband and subsequently as the lead singer of the Pacific Showband.
With 8 successful albums on the Pye Record label, Sonny soon became a household name around Ireland. The velvet tones of his soft mellow voice set him up to survive the inevitable 1980's decline of the showband era.
Affectionately known as the window cleaner because of his trademark hand moving stage mannerism, Sonny is also known as "mister nice guy" of the Irish music industry.
Over the years Sonny has presented a TV show called "Cabaret" and appeared on the Late Late show, Live at 3 and Open House among others.
While he has eased up on his workrate in recent years, he is still a regular with the Cork Jazz Band during the annual Cork Jazz festival.
Sonny's show at the Ballyfermot Community Civic Centre, with support from special guests Charm is set to be a great night of nostalgia and fabulous musical entertainment.
